The works were commenced immediately after the staff and pupils took possession of their new school adjacent to the old site. A good deal of public interest was centred on the project as the school was a major focal point for the community.

Although demolition operations to the single and two storey structure had little in the way of engineering difficulty, the task was made all the more complex because all the steel support mullions contained Asbestos Insulation Board within the box sections and these, some 300 or more, had to be dismantled one at a time and disposed of as contaminated waste. As befits the Dorton ethos on waste reduction, all materials other than the asbestos contaminated products were recycled via local waste transfer facilities thereby reducing the need for landfill to the barest minimum.

The whole operation was a model example of logistics, communications, liaison and practical application working in conjunction with the desires of Kier Western, Cornwall CC, the demolition team and asbestos removal division to bring about a successful conclusion on time and within budget.
